The Great Leap Foward was a program, launched in 1958, by Mao that urged people to make a superhuman effort to increase farm and industrial output. Communes, which were thousands acres of land, were created to help make agriculture more efficient. The point of this program was to change China into a modern communist society. The Great Leap Foward was a failure due to bad weather and no food production.
